Katherine Govier gives an illustrated talk about the works and life of the great Japanese painter/designers, Hokusai, and his daughter Oei. Was the man who made The Great Wave off Kanagawa the only master in North Star Studio in 19thcentury Edo? Katherine will talk about her research and her novel, The Ghost Brush. Katherine will be on-hand to sign her novel following the presentation.

Cathryn and Fran Jenkins: Two Generations Carved in Stone

Here’s a unique opportunity to meet mother and daughter team, Fran and Cathryn Jenkins. These renowned sculptors will discuss the process of bringing grizzly bears to life in stone. Hear stories of their encounters with bears in life and art.

Articulations: Art Appreciation Lecture Series offers participants an introduction to a broad spectrum of key individuals, moments, issues and ideas that have influenced the production of art over the past century.  Renowned artists, historians, and other arts professionals will share their insight and expertise, providing an occasion in which to think critically and engage in conversations about art.

September 28 Dr. John O’Brian presents “The Voice of Fire and Other Art Conflagrations,” the story of his experience on the National Gallery of Canada’s Acquisition Committee that made the controversial decision to purchase American artist Barnett Newman’s large acrylic on canvas painting Voice of Fire.

October 5 Dr. Leslie Dawn speaks about Emily Carr’s experience in navigating the Group of Seven’s accusations that she was “painting against the nation”

WALTER PHILLIPS GALLERY: JANET CARDIFF, FOREST WALK

Cardiff’s audio walks guide participants on a journey combining their own experience of the physical environment with the additional sounds and voices recorded on a CD. The artist provides directions and tells stories creating a complex sensory encounter that challenge the participants’ sense of space and time. Are the sounds and activities the participants sense really happening, or are they a fictional construct?

To experience Forest Walk, the first of Cardiff’s ground-breaking walks, please speak with the gallery assistant at the Walter Phillips Gallery during open hours from June 1 to September 31.
