AUGUST 24, 2010 - Calgary – Paul Squires, Chairman, and the Board of Directors of the Leighton Art Centre, Gallery and Museum are pleased to announce that effective September 1, 2010 Mr. Tony Luppino will be joining the Leighton Art Centre as Executive Director.

“I have been intrigued for years by this art centre in the foothills that nurtures practicing artists and inspires art and nature appreciators,” said Mr. Luppino about the Leighton Art Centre. “The Centre has ambitious plans to build on its unique Alberta heritage inspired by an artist who was way ahead of his time in being an architect, furniture designer, commercial graphic artist and painter of the Rockies. CCA BULLETIN: LONG-FORM CENSUS CONTROVERSY & THE ARTS

Filed under: news | Back to: Homepage

On June 26, as Canadians were focused on the G-8 and G-20 meetings in Toronto, the government discretely announced its decision that the long-form census would no longer be compulsory. The census, which is sent every five years by Statistics Canada to a fifth of Canadian households, would be replaced by a voluntary survey of a full third of Canadian households. The short version of the national census, which contains only eight questions, remains compulsory and protected by the Constitution.

Statistics Canada was not consulted on this decision but simply asked to provide alternative solutions, none of which, they recognize, will provide the same quantity and quality of information. While no solution can adequately compensate for the change in methodology, the extended voluntary Household Survey will cost Statistics Canada an estimated $ 30 million more to administer a system which all statisticians describe as faulty. CCA’s Year in Review

It’s now late June and after our wrap-up of the parliamentary session, it is time to review what the CCA has accomplished over the past year. The CCA’s accomplishments were discussed last week in Ottawa during its annual general meeting and during a board meeting.  While the board meeting was occupied in good part by discussions on important policy issues like copyright reform, foreign ownership of cultural industries and pre-budget submissions, the AGM was an opportunity to reflect on the CCA’s standing after four years of repositioning and reconstruction.

CHRC RELEASES REPORT ON EFFECT OF RECESSION ON CULTURAL SECTOR IN CANADA

Filed under: news | Back to: Homepage

The global recession is expected to reduce revenues for cultural enterprises by approximately $3.1 billion in 2009“.

This is one of the findings of “The Effect of the Global Economic Recession on Canada’s Creative Economy in 2009″, a report prepared by The Conference Board of Canada for the Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) that measures the impact of the current recession on the cultural sector.

Traditional culture sector revenue streams such as business advertising, endowments, and municipal funding have been eroded due to the weak economy and the steep decline in stock markets. Cultural industries have felt the pinch. For example, the report highlights the fact that written media and broadcasting which depend heavily on business advertising are expected to see real revenues fall by 6.1 per cent and 4.8 per cent respectively.  More >>
