NATURE FORMS
March 25 to April 24, 2010
Opening Reception:
Thursday, March 25, 7 to 9:30 pm
After a trip to Nicaragua, Marcia Schmidt was greatly influenced by the beauty and people. In her series of paitings, she depicts the banana plant in a realistic yet abstract manner. The plant, from its beginning stage to flowering, from production to the decay, is grand and amazing. She explores the banana plant and how it is vital and integral to the country.
Leona Olausen’s series of oil paintings explore extreme close-up views of tree roots. The tree roots represent earth energy, where fertility and growth sculpt intertwining tubular forms under and above the ground. Leona is inspired and intrigued by the endless mystery of forms in nature.

The Merchant of Venice and the Character of Cabala.
OCTOBER 15 TO NOVEMBER 14, 2009
Opening Reception October 15, 7 to 9:30pm
Art is an act of interpretation. To interpret Shakespeare, it’s best to start by understanding the structure of his plays–the framework he uses for each piece. What Wade is attempting to show with this group of paintings is Shakespeare’s use of the Jewish philosophical practice of Cabala as his framing structure for The Merchant of Venice.
The Merchant of Venice has often been misperceived as an anti-Semitic play, but as these paintings suggest, all his characters as well as the play’s structure come from Cabala and more specifically are manifestations of the forces that make up the “Tree of Life”. By appreciating this underlying philosophical structure, it is possible to understand Shakespeare’s intent and interpret the play in a new light. Harmony, integration and balance are the key features of both Cabala and the play.

Doing What Comes Naturally: Hand Weavers, Spinner & Dyers of Alberta
The members of the Hand Weavers, Spinners & Dyers of Alberta are pleased to honour the United Nations International Year of Natural Fibres (INYF) 2009 with the theme of “Doing What Comes Naturally” for their latest exhibition of work from the multi-talented artists.
The theme invites viewers to make connections with beautiful colours and textures that are reflected through what we wear and do in everyday life. The HWSDA members have created pieces that deeply explore what they each “do naturally” through their use of fibres, both natural and man-made. While exploring this natural theme, the members of the HSWDA reflect on their growing desire for “groundedness” in an increasingly frenetic world that relies so heavily on modern technology.
