It is nationally recognized as the region’s signature cultural event and is visited by over 50,000 children, youth and adults from Alberta. BC, and Saskatchewan. The public artwork at the Festival plays an important role by contributing an experiential and thought-provoking visual art experience for community members and visitors.

The goal of the public art commission is the development, implementation and installation of a three-dimensional, artist-led, temporary project of artistic merit that engages the community in one or more of the following ways:

  2. in meaningful dialogue and/or exchange of ideas in conjunction with the artwork;
  3. as collaborators in the artwork concept development and/or production phases:
  4. as co-creators in the artwork concept development and/or production phases;
  5. in programming created in conjunction with the artwork; or by
  6. installing an artwork that is highly interactive and provides opportunities for active public participation during the Festival by allowing for the public to touch, look, move through or otherwise interact with the artwork in considered and inspiring ways.

The public artwork will be temporarily installed from May 29 — June 3, 2018 during the Festival and will be located on Festival grounds in a highly visible place for the public to enjoy. Scope and scale (maximum footprint of 40 x 50 feet) of the three-dimensional artwork installation will be proposed by the Artist/Team and could include a project with a single footprint or multiple components placed in strategic locations.

The commissioned artwork will be chosen by a Jury through a one-stage Artwork Selection process. Following the review of all eligible ITT submissions, a final artist/team will be selected for the commission in January 2018.

Please note this is an announcement. All artists/teams wishing to submit proposals will require the complete Call to Artists — Invitation to Tender. For the complete Invitation to Tender document please contact:
