Announcing the Exhibition & Sale of the encaustic artwork of Montreal artist, Jacques Payette May 5th to May 22nd, 2012 at Loch Gallery, Calgary
Jacques Payette was born in Montreal in 1951. In the early 90’s, Payette, a self-taught artist, began experimenting with encaustic painting. This age-old technique of mixing pigments in hot wax is a demanding process requiring rapid and accurate execution. The resulting transparent and opaque effects have helped to convey the timeless interpretation of the artist’s personal world of family, friends and familiar landscapes. In many paintings, a hint of nostalgia often references Payette’s fascination and knowledge of 18th century furnishings and objects. In this body of work, the artist is exhibiting new interior still life and figure paintings of younger members of his family.
In 2011, the Musee National des Beaux Arts de Quebec held a retrospective entitled, “Capturing Time” honouring Payette’s career of public and private exhibitions from 1973 to 2011 in Canada, the US, Mexico and France. His paintings are in many public collections including Hart House, University of Toronto, the Art Bank, Ottawa, Musee d’art contemporain, Montreal, Musee de Sherbrooke, and the Musee National des Beaux-Arts de Quebec. At least thirty major Canadian corporations include his paintings in their collections.
